We found out a thing Nasa can't repair. Didn't expect it.

the whole house system in my home is so old it was designed to use FREON of all things! :o so when it broke (totally beyond repair since it was so old the parts don't even EXIST anymore) i basically couldn't afford to have the ENTIRE thing ripped out, and a new coolant system and all installed. the single room units like are popular in Japan (that they got) are QUITE easily replaceable. the condenser/heat exchanger unit that is on the OUTSIDE of the home is TINY compared to the same units designed for a whole-house system. the one-room outside units i've seen gaining popularity in the USA are about the size of a 7-day long travel suitcase. also, depending on how 'broken' it was... our cute couple MAY have needed to only replace the part of the AC that is INSIDE their home... that is WAY cheaper than replacing the ENTIRE system in and outside of the home.

shrug, the ones i've seen with my own two eyeballs externally in Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Italy, Germany, the UK, and here in the US all have different sizes and somewhat different shapes. in my experience, generally they're rectangular and bigger than a day-bag that INTERNATIONAL LAW states will be this that and the other-size so as to easily fit in the overhead compartment of an airliner. so checked luggage WOULD BE an appropriate mental image to paint for somebody.

All AC's use freon unless you're talking about a swamp cooler (unit that pumps water over pads and blows air that's somewhat cooler). Thankfully we have these things called "window units": Open the window, stick the ac in, shut the window on it. The condenser is on the outside and the evaporator is on the inside. You don't even have to be Nasa-kun to install

Freon is a trademarked name belonging to DuPont / Chemours. It applies to all the refrigerants that they produce, but not to those made by other companies. Otherwise, yes, it's just a name used to refer to any number of different chemical refrigerants.

Freon was banned in the us in 2020

No they just change the chemical makeup and give it another designation (No more R-12 replaced by R-134a then replaced by..etc.) but all "refrigerant" is freon.
